In partnership with the St. Joseph County Department of Health, FREE lead screenings will be offered for children ages 1 - 6.
Screenings will take place in study room L105 in the Children’s Department at the Main Library. Lead screenings are done via a finger poke test and take approximately 15 minutes.
Lead poisoning is one of the greatest health risks that children face. Ingestion of even very small amounts of lead can cause a variety of severe and irreversible health problems, including decreased muscle and bone growth, speech and language problems, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and decreased intelligence. Children under the age of 7 are especially at risk because their brains are still developing.
One of the greatest risks for children in our area is that many homes in St. Joseph County were built before 1978, when lead paint was banned. Lead poisoning can happen to children living or spending time in these homes from exposure to the paint chips and dust created by lead paint. Children can also be exposed to lead from contaminated soil, as well as glazed pottery, toys, and cosmetics from other countries.
