River Park Meeting Room

Learn about rocket recovery systems and Newtonian forces. Create your own parachute design then makes changes to it. See how changes can affect the results of the experiment. Ages 6-11.

Coffee Filter Parachutes: In this activity, students will first be taught about the basics of rocket recovery systems. There will also be a short teaching about Newtonian forces, specifically drag. Then, students will design their own parachute for an object using a coffee filter and pipe cleaners. Students will have the opportunity to customize their parachute with markers and change their parachute design (e.g. cutting holes in the parachute, crumpling the parachute, etc.) to see how changes in design can change the results of the experiment.
