Join author Gabrielle Robinson to discuss her book, about a group of African American Studebaker workers who triumphed over entrenched racism in the 1950s.
In 1950, a group of African American workers at the Studebaker factory in South Bend met in secret. Their mission was to build homes away from the factories and slums where they were forced to live. After a struggle of several years, they won out over discrimination to build 22 homes in a white neighborhood and create a vibrant community there. We celebrate their achievement, learn from their example, but also recognize that their battle is not won yet. "The public policies of yesterday still shape the racial landscape of today" (Richard Rothstein, The Color of Law.)
Together with author Gabrielle Robinson we will talk about both the inspiring Better Homes story and why it still is important for us today.
