As an example of modern Big Science projects, Hildreth will discuss the discovery of the Higgs Boson at CERN, in which Notre Dame scientists were active and important participants. He will talk about the sociological challenges of doing this kind of science, as well as some of the technical capabilities developed to do this work. He will delve into the work of Notre Dame students and some of the interesting partnerships that have enabled Notre Dame to be leaders in several areas. He will give some overview of what the future entails for particle physics research around the globe, and what Notre Dame may do in this space.
