Taking a walk through South Bend: How can urban landscapes improve air and water quality, cool neighborhoods on a hot day, and support biodiversity?
Deb Marr, Professor of Ecology, Department of Biological Sciences and Faculty member of Sustainability Studies at Indiana University South Bend
Urban landscapes are more than backdrops – they reflect our history, knowledge, and affect the health of our communities in fundamental ways. The city of South Bend is working to nearly double our urban tree canopy coverage. In this talk we will explore ways that soil ecology and increasing tree canopy coverage can improve human health, as well as address the complex problems of climate change and loss of biodiversity. I will share some early data that we have on ways that soil ecology is affected by landscaping practices, and connections between landscape and carbon emissions. We will also consider how plant species can alter soils. There will be hands on samples where you can see organisms that live in soils, learn about their function, with the ultimate goal of developing an eye for urban landscapes that improve air and water quality, cool neighborhoods on a hot day, and support biodiversity.
Our Universe Revealed is a partnership between the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University South Bend and St. Joseph County Public Library. It allows local experts to explore topics in science and wider research with the public in an accessible way through talks and events. No technical background is needed – we believe that science and cutting edge research should be available to everyone!
