Explore some of the most exciting and cutting edge topics in scientific research. All are welcome!
Speaker: Saurja DasGupta, PhD, Assistant Professor in Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Notre Dame
They say life is complicated these days - and it was much simpler in the past. But what does this mean to a scientist trying to understand how life was born on the Earth almost 4 billion years ago? In this talk, I invite you on a journey through humanity’s enduring quest to understand where life comes from. We will explore how philosophers, scientists, and dreamers have wrestled with this question across cultures and centuries. From ancient half-baked ideas to cutting-edge experiments, I will show how modern researchers are uncovering clues to life’s beginnings using the tools of chemistry. Along the way, I will tell you stories, share some cool artwork, and share surprising insights into the fundamental principles that govern all living systems. Together, we will see how simple molecules may have organized into the first living systems, and what this tells us about the existence of life elsewhere in the universe. Let there be Life!
