The Silo Room

Enjoy a hands-on science extravaganza! Create your own custom slime and compare your mixture with ooblek. The team will rapidly freeze flowers in nitrogen and make a spooky smoke bubble with dry ice!

  • Making Slime: In this demonstration, we will make slime from common household items. Glue is a key component of the slime as it is a polymer, which means that it is a long chain-like molecule, similar to how paperclips can string together.
  • Making Oobleck: Oobleck is considered a non-Newtonian fluid, which means that it acts like a liquid when it is poured, but it also can act like a solid when a force is acting upon it.
  • Liquid Nitrogen Flowers: For this experiment, flowers are submerged into the liquid nitrogen, which causes the water inside of the cells of the flowers to freeze rapidly. This rapid freezing causes the water to expand and form ice crystals, which makes the flowers extremely brittle and easy to shatter when you touch them!
  • Smoke Bubbles: In this demonstration, we make bubbles that are filled with smoke, and students are able to hold the bubbles in their hands. The “smoke” is made from dry ice, which is solid carbon dioxide. \
