Currently, over 600 measles cases have been reported in the United States. Measles is caused by a very contagious virus that can lead to symptoms such as high fever, rash, painful swallowing, and ear infections. Serious complications such as pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, deafness and death may occur. The best way to protect against measles is through vaccination—two doses of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine provide 97% protection against measles!
Children should get their first dose of the MMR vaccine at one year old and their second dose at four to six years old. The Department of Health will be providing MMR vaccines to children ages 1-18 who are due for their first or second dose. The vaccine is free with most insurance plans, and for children without insurance the cost will be waived. The immunization process typically takes 15 minutes, but provides a lifetime of protection.
