In partnership with the St. Joseph County Department of Health, FREE lead screenings will be offered for children ages 1 - 6.
Screenings will take place in study room L105 in the Children's Department at the Main Library. Screenings are done via a blood draw and take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
Children under 7 years of age are at risk because they are growing so rapidly and because they tend to put their hands or other objects, which may be contaminated with lead dust, into their mouths.
Risks of lead poisoning for a child include:
- Living/spending time in homes built before 1978
- Siblings with elevated blood lead levels
- Family members working in high-risk environments that include working with metals or lead based items
- Household members with high-risk hobby (working with stained glass, some factory work, refurbishing antiques)
