Adult Virtual Programming Room

Our first book in a multi-book discussion series, The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee is an eye-opening look at why we need to work harder for racial equity. LeRoy King will help lead our discussion.

Please join us for a new bi-monthly book discussion series focusing on how our community and society can work toward true inclusion. The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together, by Heather McGhee, kicks off our series.

Heather C. McGhee's specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. As she dug into subject after subject, from the financial crisis to declining wages to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a common problem at the bottom of them all: racism—but not just in the obvious ways that hurt people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It's the common denominator in our most vexing public problems, even beyond our economy. McGhee makes a convincing case that in finding common ground with each other and rejecting the zero-sum structures ingrained in American culture, we can move forward toward mutual understanding for the betterment of everyone.

Special community partner LeRoy King will help lead our discussion of The Sum of Us. LeRoy has facilitated many difficult conversations and has developed frameworks and strategies to address systemic barriers to diversity and inclusion during his 30-year career as a pastor, Executive Director of non-profits, and now as owner and principal consultant at LK3 Consulting, LLC.

Relevant Reads: The Journey to Inclusion series is a joint partnership between the St. Joseph County Public Library, the University of Notre Dame, Brain Lair Books and a variety of community partners.
