The 13th Amendment abolished slavery "except as a punishment for crime," and in doing so, the stage was set for the United States to go from having one of the largest populations of enslaved people in the world to the nation with the largest population of people incarcerated in the world. In this session, learn about how to research ancestors - whether enslaved or free - as they were held in jails, prisons, hotels, and more.

About the Presenter
Nicka Smith is a professional photographer, speaker, host, consultant, and documentarian with more than 20 years of experience as a genealogist. She has extensive experience in African ancestored genealogy, reverse genealogy, and is expert in genealogical research in the Northeastern Louisiana area, and researching enslaved communities.
